Obituary
William Furniss Hetherington
William Furniss Hetherington passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Riner, VA exactly as he wanted it- having had the opportunity to be with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at his bedside prior to his passing. Bill was born in Danbury, CT on 26 Nov 1931 to Stanley & Geraldine Hetherington. He attended Rogers HS, graduated from the University of RI, and earned his master’s degree at Columbia University. Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Joan Hetherington, on 29 Mar 1952 in St. James Episcopal Church in Newport, RI and they were happily married for over 63 years. He served in the Air Force as a weatherman after which he and Joan moved to New City Park in 1959. Bill was a teacher for 34 years at Mt. Vernon High School, Scoutmaster for Troop 444, and he was a driving force within the community of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, and New City Park Lake where he served as President and “chief cook and bottle washer” for over 54 years.
He is survived by:
His son Jeffrey Hetherington and his wife Lolly of Chapin, SC and their son Michael and his wife Ashley and their children Jonathon and Reagan, and Jeff and Lolly’s daughter Linda Appling.

His ashes will be interred next to his wife at the Memorial Garden at St. John’s Episcopal Church in New City, NY. When NY opens up later in the summer, a celebration of his life will take place at New City Park Lake.
